MOUTH BREATHING

Mouth breathing or having constantly open lips is a cause and/or signal of tongue thrust and low tongue rest posture. Long-term mouth breathing compromises the natural process of breathing which relies on the nasal airway to cleanse and purify the air for the pulmonary system making people more prone to asthma, allergies, and even ear tube problems. Studies also indicate higher risk factors for airway problems at night, decreased concentration, ADHD diagnosis, and poor craniofacial development.

TONGUE THRUSTING

Tongue thrust is the act of pushing the tongue against or between the teeth when swallowing. The constant pressure of the tongue against or between the teeth will not allow the teeth to bite together. This is known as an open bite. Studies are indicating that tongue thrust is a risk factor for TMD and facial pain. It may occur due to a low rest posture and/or a tongue tie.

TONGUE TIE

The condition is present at birth. A short, tight band of tissue tethers the tongue's tip or base to the floor of the mouth. It can affect how a person eats and speaks, and can interfere with breastfeeding. Symptoms include difficulty sticking out the tongue past the lower front teeth or lifting it to the upper teeth, though many people have no symptoms.
Our Packages
At MyoFunctional Associates of GA and AL, we don’t just “throw out some exercises” for you to do on your own. Our treatment plans and programs have been thoughtfully designed after years of study and testing to get the best results possible. We know what works and we teach you how to apply it in your everyday life so your myotherapy truly becomes functional!
Our treatment packages are customized for each and every patient’s needs and goals.

Below are descriptions of the different ways we work with people, but the best way to begin your therapy journey with us is to book a 20-minute phone consult so we can answer all your questions.

Assessment (in person or online)

Includes 90-120 minutes in office or online with an interview, patient education, pictures, measurements, and a detailed report.
NOTE: It is best to do a live assessment if possible.
While many myotherapists only work online, we offer in-person assessments and a mix of in person and online treatment because we find better results overall when we get to connect with you and treat you live in our office (correct lighting, use of physical assessment tools, and posture grid). Many of our patients come from all over for the in-person assessment and then continue treatment sessions online for their convenience.

Customized Treatment

During your first appointment, you’ll receive your customized regime of MyoFunctional exercises to address your specific diagnoses, needs, and goals. Our therapist will guide you on how to continue your at-home practice for optimal results.
Your second visit includes breathwork, patient education, and motivation. Your therapist will ensure your exercises are being performed correctly.
Includes 2 Therapeutic Clinics:
The goal of our patient clinics is to help you incorporate the habits that will best support your MyoFunctional treatments into your life.
Tips For Better Sleep Clinic
Issues with sleep can affect a person mentally, physically, and emotionally so it’s important you’re getting the best rest possible. This virtual or in-person clinic goes over tips to improve sleep, what to avoid doing before bedtime, as well as important vitamins and minerals that promote better rest.
“Steps in the Park”
“Steps in the Park” is our breath pattern training clinic and is exactly what the name implies. With participation in this clinic, you will walk with our team at a brisk pace while we teach you how to breathe light, low, and slow. This breathing technique will help with breath pattern, posture, as well as relieving anxiety.
*Both clinics include all exercise props needed per session.

Customizable Sessions

Customizable sessions are available ala carte, or we also offer bundles to save on cost if you are interested in all the sessions we offer. For children we offer a bundle of 1o sessions and offer 7 sessions for adults. These bundles not only include the sessions but include a thorough assessment as well as professional reports showing all information collected and a complete posture breakdown at the beginning and end of treatment. If this is something you might be interested in and would like to discuss further, click below to set up a complimentary phone consultation.

PLEASE NOTE: We will do our best with the boundaries of these customized programs to complete your myofunctional needs. For some they are enough, for others they may need more. If so, we will continue to move forward with a per session fee.
